When we look far ahead—10 years, 50 years, 100 years into the future—we have the luxury of assuming that things will be radically different. We are free to take wild guesses and push the imagination without factoring in political and financial and cultural constraints. The distant future is ours to play with. The not-so-distant future? Not so much. The only way to see what’s on the horizon—the next day, the next month, the next year—is to stay firmly grounded in the present. And while the long view will never cease to inspire, there is a certain power in what’s next. It’s where today’s reality meets tomorrow’s potential. -GOOD
A lot of people kinda give me weird eyes when I tell them how much I love Reggae, and for understandable reasons. To most people, Reggae beings with overplayed Bob Marley “Legend” compact discs from middle school, goes to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” somehow detours to favorite scenes from Cool Runnings, and eventually lands in the present at some weird Sean Kingston/Sean Paul intersection.
You get even weirder looks when you tell them you like Ska. It’s all like, “Mighty Mighty Bosstones were cool in like, 1999, bro” and you have to remind them that it was actually more like 1997, but even that is debatable.
Did you know that Ska preceded reggae? After World War II, a lot of American servicemen were stationed in Jamaica, and New Orleans radio stations were heard on their radios. Jamaicans, inspired by the American rhythm and blues, combined it with a calypso beat and gave birth to a completely new form of music. It wasn’t until Jamaica’s independence from the UK that the nation really adopted it, though. The streets were flooded with people dancing in celebration, and Ska was the sound of that era.
This fast tempo would later chill out and develop alternate musical arrangements, giving birth to Rocksteady and then Reggae. [Extremely abridged version]
I could go on for awhile about how fascinated I am with this music, but for now I’ll just link you to this playlist that I made with some of my favorite songs from that era.
Subscribe to it and enjoy!
This is why I love Victoria Secret!
Victoria’s Secret Angels Get Superheroic in Annual Fashion Show Preview [link]
This year’s Victoria’s Secret fashion show will feature some superheroic looks, as revealed by photos from a preview of the show that took place last Wednesday in New York City. The annual fashion event is renown for exhibiting extravagantly glamorous ensembles that are often decadent and fantastical, and this year’s show appears to be no exception. Victoria’s Secret current roster of Angels have transformed into superhero alter-egos with heavenly wings upgraded to metallic armor and colorful capes, strutting down the runway in vibrant bustiers, bold catsuits, and boob windows that would make Power Girl look demure.
Check out all of superheroic Angels (and a guest cameo from Kanye West) at ComicsAlliance!
The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture.
